Swindlers Arrested in Avenue Louise Hotel

July 16, 2010, 3:17 pm

BRUSSELS – Two men were arrested in an Avenue Louise hotel Wednesday after trying to swindle a customer in a fictitious gold sale.

Just two weeks earlier, the same two men successfully scammed a German man out of 160,000 euros. In this episode, they had arranged to sell the man two trucks. When the man paid in cash, one went to check the notes' authenticity; moments later, his accomplice got up to use the bathroom – but neither ever returned to the table.

Wednesday, the same two men – described only as "Africans of 38 and 43 years" by local reports – set up a scam to sell a man 1,000 kilograms of gold. They were recognized by hotel staff, however, who called the police.
