BRUSSELS – EU Home Affairs commissioner Cecilia Malmström told reporters that individual member states – not the European Union – should decide whether or not to ban the burqa.
"I do not see the need for a European law on the burqa," stated Malmström during a press conference with the Spanish presidency of the EU.
Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, the Spanish interior minister, said that "it is an internal policy decision."
By a 131-129 vote, Spain's senate voted last week to ban the burqa.
Belgium's proposed ban, which passed the lower house by a 136-0 vote, now awaits approval by the senate.
French legislation is expected to move forward in July.
